Montefiore Nyack Hospital Recognizes Trauma Awareness Month

Nyack, N.Y., May 15, 2025 – May is National Trauma Awareness Month (NTAM), a month-long observation dedicated to education, prevention, and advocacy for those affected by traumatic injuries. The American Trauma Society (ATS) and The Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) have joined forces in developing the annual National Trauma Awareness Month (NTAM) campaign. This year’s theme, “Model Safety Every Day: For A Stronger Tomorrow,” emphasizes how everyday choices and actions can protect lives and strengthen communities.

According to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, injury accounts for more than 150,000 deaths and over 3 million non-fatal injuries in the United States per year. Around the world, injury is responsible for more than 5 million deaths per year. The top three trauma-related injuries are falls, being struck by a foreign object, and vehicle crashes. One important note about trauma-related injuries is that, for the most part, they are preventable. By making safe choices and exercising caution daily, we create lasting habits that protect ourselves and influence those around us.

In recognition of Trauma Awareness Month, Montefiore Nyack Hospital offers these safety tips to promote better health, injury prevention, and safe environments at home, at work, and in our communities.

Home Safety

• Keep walkways clear to prevent slips and falls.
• Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors—test monthly.
• Store medications and cleaning supplies out of the reach of children.
• Use outlet covers and secure furniture if young children are at home.
• Practice safe sleep for infants—crib, flat surface, no loose bedding.

Road & Travel Safety

• Always wear your seatbelt, even for short trips.
• Never text and drive—distracted driving is a top cause of trauma.
• Ensure car seats are age-appropriate and properly installed.
• Use helmets when biking, skating, or riding scooters.
• Don’t drive under the influence—make a plan for safe transportation.

Workplace Safety

• Follow proper lifting techniques to protect your back.
• Report or fix hazards like spills or broken equipment right away.
• Keep emergency contacts and first aid kits accessible.
• Encourage a culture of safety—speak up in support of your team.

Mental & Emotional Safety

• Stress can lead to accidents. Take breaks when overwhelmed.
• Talk to someone if you are feeling down or unsafe—mental health is health.
• Model kind, respectful behavior at home and in the workplace.
• Teach kids emotional safety and boundaries early.

Health & Hygiene Safety

• Wash hands regularly to prevent infection.
• Stay up to date on vaccinations, including tetanus and flu shots.
• Store food properly and practice kitchen safety (e.g., knife handling, turning pot handles inward).

During May and every day, be mindful and make a conscious effort to model safety. Small actions, like wearing a seatbelt, using protective gear, or eliminating distractions, can inspire others and build a culture of safety. By making safe choices daily, whether on the road, at home, or in the workplace, we create lasting habits that protect ourselves and influence those around us.
