Free Colon Cancer Screening

Free Colon Cancer Screenings for Uninsured, Eligible Individuals

Nyack, N.Y., June 30, 2025 – On Friday, July 25, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., The Cancer Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital will offer a free colorectal cancer screening (Fecal Occult Blood Test/Fecal Immunochemical Test Kit) for men and women, ages 45 and older, at average risk for colorectal cancer. The screenings are open to residents of Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, and Ulster Counties in New York State. The screening will be funded by the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of the Hudson Valley and Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Registration is strongly recommended to secure an appointment. Spanish-speaking assistance is available. To check eligibility and register, please call 845-348-8511.*

Individuals who are eligible for a screening will receive a test kit to collect a tiny sample of stool (poop) at home. The sample will either be mailed to a lab or brought to a doctor’s office, depending on the test kit instructions. The kit checks for hidden (occult) blood in your stool, which you can’t see with the naked eye. Blood in stool can be a sign of issues like polyps or early colorectal cancer. If the test is negative (no blood found), you’re usually fine and can repeat the test as recommended (often yearly). If the test is positive (blood found), you will need further tests, usually a colonoscopy, to find the cause.

If the screening test reveals an abnormal finding, diagnostic (follow-up testing) services are available through the CSP for eligible individuals at no cost. Follow-up tests will determine whether the findings identified during the screening are cancerous. The CSP will also provide a case manager who will guide you through your follow-up diagnostic appointment.
