Nyack, N.Y., April 22, 2026 – Montefiore Nyack Hospital is recruiting volunteers to assist hospitalized patients at mealtimes. This volunteer opportunity is being offered through the hospital’s Support and Promotion Of Optimal Nutritional Status program (SPOONS).

The SPOONS program is directed by the Education and Volunteer Department and will provide training for volunteers to assist adult patients who need support or just companionship while eating.

“Older adults, especially those with cognitive difficulties or memory loss, require more time to eat a meal than younger adults,” said Helen Hayes-Perkins, Serv Safe, NDTR, BSHCA
Director Volunteer Services & Gift Shop at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. “Our volunteers are key partners in care, as studies indicate that seniors who have companionship at mealtimes eat better than if they eat alone.”

SPOONS will pair trained volunteers with patients. Volunteers may assist with tray set-up, feeding patients who require assistance, or simply being a friend during mealtimes, which is traditionally one of the most social times of the day.
