Fireworks Safety
There’s no question that summer fireworks spark excitement. But before you pull up your lawn chair to enjoy the show, consider the risk: According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2024, 14,700 people were treated in the emergency room for firework related injuries, of which 37% of these injuries were burns.
Firework injuries can be devastating and often avoided by taking some commonsense steps,
said Steven Apicella, director of Safety and Security at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. It’s best to play it safe and attend a fireworks display put on by professionals.
To avoid a trip to the ER, here are some tips the CPSC recommends:
- Keep children safe. Never allow children to ignite fireworks, including sparklers.
- Keep water handy. Keep a hose or a bucket of water nearby in case there is a firework mishap.
- If it’s a dud, leave it. Never try to light a firework that has already been lit or not ignited fully.
- Celebrate responsibly. Do not light fireworks if impaired by drugs or alcohol.
