Montefiore Nyack Hospital was recently awarded the 2018 IBCLC Care Award for excellence in lactation care by The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®) and International Lactation Consultant Association® (ILCA®). This honor recognizes Montefiore Nyack Hospital and organizations whose healthcare professionals hold IBCLC® certification and provide a lactation program that offers activities to help promote and support breastfeeding.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for most infants. It has been proven to reduce the risk for some short- and long-term health conditions for both infants and mothers. The Prenatal Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital helps new mothers and families successfully initiate breastfeeding and assists with overcoming any breastfeeding challenges by providing accurate information and continued support.
Breastfeeding has important health benefits for both babies and mothers. Infants who are breastfed have reduced risks of asthma, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, ear and respiratory infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfeeding can help lower a mother’s risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and ovarian and breast cancer. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the baby’s first six months.
Most mothers want to breastfeed but stop early due to a lack of ongoing support. Montefiore Nyack Hospital has several upcoming support groups scheduled that will help new mothers learn about how to successfully breastfeed their baby:
- Pregnant mothers and mothers with infants and toddlers up to 18 months old are invited to join the New Moms Circle support group. This group meets once-a-month for a topical discussion facilitated by representatives from Montefiore Nyack Hospital, including a registered nurse and a certified lactation specialist.
- The next New Moms Circle support group will meet on Saturday, September 15th from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM at The Prenatal Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital located at 258 High Street in Nyack, NY.
- The next dates that the New Moms Circle support group are scheduled to meet at The Prenatal Center are Saturday, October 20 and Saturday, November 17, 2018.
The Prenatal Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital is the first OB/GYN practice to achieve the NYS Breastfeeding Friendly Practice Designation in Rockland County by meeting New York State Department of Health’s comprehensive guidelines for its Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities initiative (http://rcklnd.us/breastfeeding).
