Nyack, N.Y. May 2, 2023 – May is Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death and disability in the United States. According to research by the American Stroke Association, hemorrhagic strokes make up about 13 percent of the nearly 800,000 strokes that occur annually and have a higher mortality rate than other types of stroke.
A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue. Two types of weakened blood vessels usually cause hemorrhagic stroke: aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
Launched in February, new hemorrhagic stroke-specific features are now available to Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke participants as part of the American Heart Association’s Hemorrhagic Stroke Initiative. Montefiore Nyack Hospital is among the first hospitals to expand focus on hemorrhagic stroke patient care by adding no-cost additions within a week of its launch.
“As an early adopter of these new data elements and features, we are excited to have enhanced information tracking to provide even better care for our patients experiencing hemorrhagic stroke,” said Anthony Matejicka, DO, MPH, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Montefiore Nyack Hospital. “We are proud to be part of this national effort.”
